30 Rock Storytime – a 30 Rock picture book project
When it comes to funny sitcoms with ridiculous characters and smart, witty writing, 30 Rock is near the top of my list of favorites. I started a personal portfolio project to see what jokes and characters from the show could be like if they were illustrated like a children’s book.
During the run-up to the 2020 presidential election, I did lots of reading on the candidates. This quote from Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s book, The Shortest Way Home, really stuck with me and I decided I needed to create a motivational lettering illustration for it to serve as a reminder going forward: “Make haste to be kind. Be quick to love.”
I ended up doing several different iterations of the design and ended up with these two that I liked so much!

If you like them as much as I do, I made a couple wallpapers for your desktop. Just choose the version you like best below.
I am in love with craft beer and the craft beer label illustration and design that goes along with it. For inktober, I decided I wanted to have some fun with it and design my own beer can art! Alternating each day, I would create one new ink drawing on the first, then color it and mock it up on a beer can for the second.
Inktober is a daily drawing challenge that takes place throughout the month of October each year. It was initially started by illustrator Jake Parker and today has hundreds of thousands of participants from around the world. In 2019, I decided to take a stab at it, but in my own way.
This is the post that inspired it all! Inktober provides a one-word prompt each day. The first day of 2019 was “ring.” I really didn’t want to draw something super obvious. So I did some word association and just started brainstorming what to do. Ring. That got me to bathtub ring. Then, circus ring. And finally wrestling ring! I grew up LOVING wrestling and used to watch it with my Dad all the time. One of my favorite wrestlers was Ric Flair and his signature move was the Figure Four Leg Lock. I’m pretty happy with how it all came out and that I stuck with doing something unconventional. Check out the rest of my craft beer label illustration fun below!
Hand Lettered Music Illustrations and Song Lyric Art
Aside from art, music is a major love in my life! While I can’t really play it, I really enjoy coming up with album and song lyric illustration and lettering pieces that reflect my love for some of my favorite bands (and bring a smile to people’s faces.) My current playlist includes LOTS of The Avett Brothers and needtobreathe. Being a child of the 80’s and early 90’s, I’ve got a soft spot for some Vanilla Ice and the David Bowie movie, Labyrinth.
One of my favorite things to letter is motivating and inspirations thoughts and sayings that I read or hear on podcasts, songs and movies. They serve as a constant reminder for myself, and I hope, anyone else in need of a pick-me-up!
36 Days of type is an illustration and lettering challenge that happens each Spring on instagram. For, yep, 36 days in a row, designers create each letter of the alphabet plus the numbers. (Spoiler alert! I didn’t do the numbers.)
In 2019 I decided to take on the challenge and push myself to come up with something every single day! It turned in to, not only a way to improve my skills and help to develop my illustration style, it also allowed me fun ways to share my interest and personality.
For each letter, I ended up choosing a movie or song that I enjoy and turning that into a fun illustration that incorporated the day’s letter.
I LOVE movies! And they inspire a lot of my movie and TV handlettering and illustration. I could sit down on a weekend and just watch movies if… you know I didn’t have other things to do! Some of my favorite movies of all time are (usually because I grew up with them – not necessarily because they are world-changing… maybe!) The Three Amigos, Star Wars, The Last Dragon and Shaun of the Dead.
